Overview:
In the Fall of 2019, the American Academy of Optometry and the American Optometric Association developed a formal paper that provides an interpretation of the 2018 ISO standard 19979 which provides guidance for the hygienic management of trial contact lenses intended for multi-patient use. SynergEyes utilized that paper along with the ISO 19979 to provide an overview for eye care professionals.
Multi-patient usage of trial lenses are lenses that are permitted to be used on more than one person. There are three categories of lenses for disinfection purposes that include: soft contact lenses, gas permeable lenses and hybrid contact lenses. Hybrid lenses are a composite lens that consists of a gas permeable center and an outer “skirt” which is soft contact lens material.
